Introduction to the Cohort
Kaiser Permanente of Southern California is a non-profit, group-practice health insurance program. Kaiser Permanente members are representative of the socio-demographic profile of the local population. Computer-stored prescription data from the KPSC Pharmacy Information Management System is available beginning in 1992. A sub-cohort was defined among member of this healthcare plan, based on hormone therapy usage, for a study of hormone therapy and AD risk.

Ethnicity Breakdown
In the sub-cohort described in Petitti 2008, 89% of participants were white, 4% were black, 3% were Hispanic and 4% were of other or unknown ethnicity. These percentages are not representative of the health plan members as a whole.
