Cohort: Multiple Risk Factors for Major Diseases cohort & Cancer Screening Program cohort
Risk Factors:

Introduction to the Cohort
The Multiple Risk Factors for Major Diseases (MRMD) cohort was established between 1982 and 1986. 16,693 residents ages 30 and older were recruited from 12 townships and precincts in Taiwan and completed a baseline assessment.

The Cancer Screening Program cohort was established in 1991-1992. 23,943 residents ages 30 and older were recruited from 7 (different) townships and precincts in Taiwan and completed a baseline assessment.

Both cohorts have been followed since baseline through linkage to various national databases.

Ethnicity Breakdown
In a study of hepatocellular cancer among men in a subset of the MDRD cohort (n=13,737), participants were Fukien Taiwanese (53.3%), or Hakka Taiwanese/mainland Chinese (46.7%) (Chen et al., 1993). No other information on the ethnicity of the cohorts has been reported.

Diagnosis & Evaluation Methods
In both cohorts, participants with dementia were initially identified through linkage with the records of the National Health Insurance Database in Taiwan for the years 2000, 2001, and 2002 using ICD-9 codes. Confirmation of diagnoses was then attained from neurologists or psychiatrists in the hospitals at which the patients were diagnosed. Diagnosis was based on medical record review and neuroimaging records according to criteria of the Chinese version of DSM-IV.
