Introduction to the Cohort
From 1987 to 1989, investigators for the Kungsholmen Project recruited residents, aged 75 and older, living in the Kungsholmen district of Stockholm, Sweden to participate in their longitudinal study of dementia and aging. They enrolled 1,810 participants of whom 1,473 were free of dementia. Since enrollment, participants have undergone evaluations every 2-3 years. At enrollment, members of the dementia-free cohort (based on a subsample of 1301 in Xu 2004) were aged, on average, 81.5 years old; 75% were female. Investigators have since recruited additional participants from both Kungsholmen and St Göran, an adjacent district (von Strauss 1999).

Ethnicity Breakdown
All participants were residents of the Kungsholmen district of Stockholm, Sweden. No other information on ethnicity or race has been reported.
